Leaf sensing for precision agronomy
Phytobionic is a leaf sensor that predicts CO₂ assimilation, nutrient dynamics and hydration level. Sensors are placed across the field by stratified sampling, so each management zone is represented.

Fields are not uniform
Soil texture, water holding capacity and past yield vary within a single field, and crops respond to these differences. The example below shows fifteen sensors and one base station in one field, divided into zones from a soil map or from yield history, with sensors allocated to each zone in proportion to its area.
- A reading from one location rarely describes the whole field.
- Weather stations and soil probes describe the environment, not the plant's response.
- Phytobionic measures the plant directly, at the leaf.
- Every soil or yield zone is represented.
What the sensor measures
The sensor clips onto a leaf and records continuously. Its models predict three physiological variables.
CO₂ assimilation
The rate at which the leaf fixes carbon. A direct indicator of photosynthetic activity and growth.
Nutrient dynamics
How the plant's nutrient status changes over time, to inform the timing and rate of fertilisation.
Hydration level
The water status of the plant, to detect water stress before visible symptoms appear.
Ultra-Precise Time-Series Diagnostics
Continuous leaf-level records build a time series for every sensor, so changes in plant status can be followed over hours, days and the season.
Micro-Level Insights
Readings come from individual leaves at sampled locations, giving a plant-level view of differences within a field, a greenhouse or a single growing tier.
Real-Time Chlorophyll Indexing
A chlorophyll index is reported alongside the predicted variables as data arrive, to help follow leaf condition as it changes.
Applications
How leaf-level data supports decisions in each growing system.
Greenhouse management
Adjust climate set points using the crop's measured response, not only air conditions.
CEA LED lighting
Compare light recipes against measured CO₂ assimilation.
Agrivoltaics
Quantify how crops perform under and between panel rows.
Vertical farming
Monitor plant status on each tier of a stacked system.
Irrigation
Schedule water from plant hydration rather than fixed intervals.
Open-field
Track differences between management zones over the season.
Research & breeding
Record physiological traits continuously across genotypes and treatments.
How it works
Clip onto the leaf
Each sensor clips onto a representative leaf.
Deploy across the field
Sensors are placed by stratified hexagonal sampling, so every soil or yield zone is represented, as in the example field.
Transmit to the base station
Sensors send data wirelessly to a base station at the field edge or in the facility.
Review predictions
CO₂ assimilation, nutrient dynamics and hydration level are reported by sensor and by zone on the dashboard.
